Business Colors: You Already Know The Most Important Rule

Red and blue. Maroon and white. Green and yellow.

What do your high school, your favorite sports team and most major corporations have in common? Two colors. They pick two main business colors to represent their organization, and you should, too.

It’s all about restraint

When it comes to color, the best policy is to restrain your hues. It sounds counterintuitive, but if you want your business to look good, you should stick to a limited palette of colors.

There’s a good reason for this. We expect our audience to associate specific images (like our logo and colors) with our business.

The less information we give them to “learn” about us, the better the chance they’ll absorb it.

Design 101 | Don’t Write a Thousand Words, Use a Compelling Image

Writing can be tough, especially if you’re writing for your own business.

Your words need to inform, convince and compel your readers to act. It’s a tall order, but it’s much easier to accomplish if you pair your words with an image that does some of the work for you. An image can speak a thousand words, but only if you choose it and use it carefully.

The most compelling images ask the viewer to make a mental leap to connect what’s in the image to the words you use. Straight illustrations of your topic work, too, but aren’t as engaging.

White space is any space on your web site or printed page that doesn’t have graphics or text. It’s the “non-content” your readers will thank you for including, because it makes it easier for them to consume information on your website.

When people first try to create their own marketing materials, their first impulse is to not “waste” space, and they fill their pages with information.
